At the beginning of the XXth century, Mamaia was chosen as best place to develop a sun&beach destination on Romanian Black Sea shore, 5 km north from Constanta & it‟s harbor. The grand opening of the resort happened on August 22nd  1906 with some facilities constructed around a Pier going into the sea located on the current Mamaia center. From '59 to '65 hotels were developed south from the historical center of Mamaia and from '82 to '89 the accent of development was moved to the north. Leaving aside it‟s family oriented brand, Mamaia recently evolved in the north (Navodari) as a clubbing destination competing with Ayia Napa (Cyprus), Malia (Crete), Kavos (Corfu), Zante (Zakynthos), Pag island (Croatia).

ABOUT MAMAIA

  • MAMAIA Sun&Beach destination had its grand opening on August 22nd 1906 with some facilities constructed around a Pier going into the sea located on the current Mamaia center. After WW I, the Royal family decided to continue the development of the destination. The royal palace “Cara-Dalga” was build in 1922. A casino building (still existing today) was developed in 1925, and the first hotel opened in 1936 as the “Rex” (operational until 2010). WW II brought almost all key developments to ruins, together with all second homes that have been built during the golden times of the resort. Only in 1950 the new communist regime started to restore the destination according to their needs. From '59 to '65 hotels were developed south from the historical center of Mamaia and from 1982 to 1989 the accent of development was moved to the north. In 2000 the Black Sea old hotel infrastructure went through a privatization process. The target hotels National and Unirea but also neighboring Patria hotel (after renovation: Grand Hotel Astoria) entered the property of the current owner as a result of this process. Ever since the privatization process Mamaia took off as the main sun & beach destination of Romania, with extensive development in the north towards Navodari, a transformation of the historic Mamaia brand into a trendy, clubbing destination for the wealthy young on top of the family offer.
